Genting graduated from the Beijing Forestry University and is currently a PhD student supervised by Qike and Mark. Genting is investigating the impact of particulate matter (derived from both industry and bush fires) on the capacity of insects to detect volatile odours. He used Y-maze olfactometers, electro-antennograms and scanning electron microscopy imaging, to show that 12hrs exposure to urban pollution results in the accumulation of particulate matter on the antennae of house flies. This level of contamination is sufficient to compromise the fly’s ability to detect key odours. He is using this approach to investigate the effects of exposure to bush fire smoke in flies and other insects.
